Race

Can we talk about race? I believe we can. We choose not to because of other people’s reactions. Maggie, Brooxie, and I could talk about race and be honest all day long. But that is only because we are from the same race and we are not afraid to say exactly what we feel. But at the same time, within a race, there can still be judge ment due to different beliefs. We were able to talk about race in a classroom setting, but even then no one was actually honest. I think that everyone was afraid of what others might say or do. Everyone gave general experiences, but no actual opinions.

Here are some facts from a website I found:
- Race is a modern idea. Ancient societies did not divide people according to physical differences, but according to religion, status, class, even language.
- Race has no genetic basis. Not one characteristic, trait, or gene distinguishes all members of one so-called race from all members of another so-called race.
- Slavery predates race. Throughout history, societies have enslaved others, often as a result of conquest or war, but not because of physical characteristics or a belief in natural inferiority. In America, a unique set of circumstances led to the enslavement of peoples who looked similar.

Wow Morgan, those facts are very interesting. I have never quite thought about race in light of the fact that slavery has been around longer than the idea of race. I feel that this idea of race has slavery has gone hand in hand for so long that we have automatically put these two words in the same sentence. Thank you for sharing this.

Yes I read this in a book about race years ago. Even tne Bible depicts race in the same manner. The way I look at it, especially the way you mentioned the facts about race. My ethnic group is African American, my nationality is American, my religion is open as long as God is the hire power and my race is human.

American slavery was different from other countries. In other countries the slaves were treated better and the early slaves during the European nature such as the Romans were people who owed debt. Countries like Spain also taught there slaves how to read and if a slave was expecting a baby for some one from spanish nature the church would allow them to marry. In America the slave life was much harsher and they were not allowed to read. America used the color and the features of a person looks because the servitudes from europe could leave their slave master and blend in with the crowd. The white slaves worked only for seven years for their master. So the slave owners would lose slaves in this process. Black slaves could not ran away so easily because they could be identified by thier features and they were slaves for the rest of thier life. I am taking African history this semester and slavery is the biggest topic.
